Nigel Evans Backs Conservative Residential Care Scheme

Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley, has today backed the Conservative Party’s proposal for a residential care scheme. By paying £8,000 into the scheme elderly people will be eligible take advantage of free or substantially subsidised residential scheme. A ceiling for care homes fees has not yet been set but it is thought that only those in luxury care homes would need to pay and annual top up.

Mr Evans said,

“This is a scheme that removes the worry that so many people have when approaching old age – just how will permanent residential care be affordable? Permanent residential care can consume savings and then place the burden on families to either provide financial support or care.

“By paying into the Conservative Residential Care Scheme elderly people will have piece of mind. The majority of people will be covered with just a few needing to pay top ups for luxury residential care. No longer will people be forced to sell their family home and with it their memories to pay for care.

“This policy is a welcome contribution to the fraught issue of spiraling social care costs and is entirely voluntary – nobody will be forced into care for whom it is unnecessary.”
