Conservative Councillors Support Number Plate Recognition Cameras on main roads into the Ribble Valley Ribble Valley Conservative Borough Councillors are supporting the police in making a application for a grant, to place cameras which can recognise number plates on all the main roads into the Ribble Valley . The grant application has been made by the Ribble Valley Community and Safety Partnership of which the council is part. Longridge Conservative Councillor Ken Hind and Chairman of Conservative Association explained ’ the cameras are needed by the police to help catch drive in criminals from surrounding areas. Recent crime figures for the Ribble Valley show shoplifting and vehicle crime are rising.Communities like Longridge and Clitheroe are also very vulnerable to drive in burglars who like other mobile offenders can later be traced , once a sighting has been made of the vehicle used in the crime. The cameras will act as deterrent as well as an investigative tool for the police .’ CCTV has proved to be a very potent weapon in the fight against crime. Normal CCTV cameras have however reduced effectiveness at night , but these cameras will be able to read number plates in the dark.’ It is hoped to site up to 7 cameras on all the main roads throughout the Ribble Valley ‘. |
