Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the RibbleValley, has hailed today’s defeat of the Government over the rights of Gurkha veterans to settle in the UK.

 Mr Evans said,

“This is a victory for decency and represents a huge blow to the authority, both moral and actual, of this Government.

“If alarm bells were not ringing in Downing Street before, they surely must be now.

“The Government must rectify their proposals as quickly as possible in order to provide what is right and proper to all Gurkhas who have fought for, died defending and continue to serve our country.”

Having served alongside the Gurkhas on tour and in barracks, I can honestly say that it was a real privilege. The Gurkas have the utmost integrity for heirarchy and fellow soildiers/officers, and mix well into society. They are very hard workers on the front line, learn our language and our ways, and are possibly the fittest of all the regiments (they are the demonstrator unit at Sandhurst and have been for decades due to their skills and sense of humour). For this archaic ruling to have been kept in force would be ludicrous.

We open our gates too freely to every Tom, Dick and Harriet with no skills whatsoever, they can't speak the english language - nor strive to, do not wish to integrate into wider society, even turn against the UK and expect NHS treatments/housing, separate education (in most cases) and other payments for nothing in return. These people must think were are stupid, no wonder there is a queue in France to get in here!

Yet the poor old Gurkha is not allowed to stay after coming over here where he works extreamly hard, putting his life on the line for us? As a tax payer I don't mind paying for these people to stay in the UK in retirement, they have earned my respect - keep the others out and make the rules tighter allowing people in, MUCH TIGHTER, ASAP.
