Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley and Chair of the All Party ID Fraud Group, has today commented on the Home Secretary’s announcement that ID Cards will not be compulsory for British citizens. Speaking from Westminster, Mr Evans said, “ID cards have been a waste of time and money from the moment of their conception. They also posed a great deal of danger to the ID security of British citizens. “I am pleased on the one hand that ID cards will not be compulsory but the situation has now turned into somewhat of a farce. I am amazed that the scheme has not been scrapped in its entirety. What we are left with is a situation whereby billions will be spent on a scheme that affects nobody. At a time when the Government should be watching every penny that it spends, it is making a gross spending error. “My message to the Government is simple - scrap the scheme completely and use that money to help other areas that are ailing during this recession.”
